Comic Book Reviews — “Dark” Books, 11/7/2012

There may be more reviews later. First, reviewing Swamp Thing and Animal Man #14.

Both books are in the midst of their Rotworld crossover between each other (and Frankenstein Agent of S.H.A.D.E., which I am not reading and doesn’t seem to tie in nearly as strongly as the others). As mentioned last week, I am not the biggest fan of Rotworld. There’s just so much going on that cannot carry over (I just saw Zombie Superboy get killed, which is PROBABLY not permanent) that it’s hard to get worked up over it. (Mostly, reading about Constantine and Black Orchid in Animal Man really made me want another issue of Justice League Dark to be out sooner.)

Also, the books worked best for me when they were dealing with small, personal moments — everything here is so big and the supporting characters that made the books work for me have been shuffled off to the background. We get occasional flashbacks to Buddy and Alec’s loved ones, but they’re short and there isn’t a lot of meat to them.

And the books are designed to where each series gives you a complete story on its own, which is kind enough of D.C. I suppose, but for those of us who are reading both books (especially back-to-back) it gets repetitive, with both books sharing a lot of the same beats and story structure.

The art is still excellent in both, and these are still two of my favorite characters since the relaunch. I’m just a bit underwhelmed by where we’re at right now.

About Colin Wyers

Colin Wyers writes about baseball, but not here. He is also a serious nerd and is in the business of raising the next generation of serious nerds. He writes about that here instead.
